Returning to Physical Practice After Injury

Injury creates two separate problems that often get treated as one. The first is physical: the body has a new limit, and the old practice is not yet available. The second is about identity: for people whose sense of self is meaningfully connected to physical practice, an injury is not just a disruption — it is a loss.

Both problems are real. Addressing only one of them tends to produce a return that fails.

The Physical Limit Is Not Temporary Drift

In most drift situations, the path back is clear — the practice is available, just currently not being used. After injury, the path back may be genuinely obstructed. The old version of the practice may not be possible. Trying to return to it directly may cause further harm.

This changes the design task. The goal is not to restore the old practice as quickly as possible. The goal is to find what is available now and build from there — accepting that the rebuilt version may look different from what existed before.

This is not a diminished version of the practice. It is the practice appropriate to the current body under current conditions. The framework's concept of capacity applies here directly: design for what is actually available, not for what you wish were available.

The Identity Disruption

Athletes and people with strong physical practices often experience injury as a threat to identity, not just as a physical setback. The practice is not simply something they do — it is part of how they understand themselves. When the practice is unavailable, that self-understanding is temporarily suspended.

This produces grief that is real and appropriate to acknowledge. It also produces a specific return problem: the identity wants the old practice back, not an adapted version. This can make the reduced-version period feel like failure even when it is exactly the right design response.

The work here is to distinguish between the core of the identity — being someone who trains, who moves, who competes — and the specific form the practice currently takes. The core can survive in a modified form. It does not require the full old version to remain real.

Rebuilding from a Lower Starting Point

After injury, comeback speed has to be recalibrated. The speed of recovery from previous drifts is not a useful benchmark. The system is starting from a different place with different physical resources.

Expecting old comeback speed produces frustration when the return takes longer or feels more effortful. The right comparison is not to the pre-injury self. The right comparison is to where you were last week — which gives the return room to be genuinely measured.

The Role of the Reduced Version

The reduced version is not a concession during recovery — it is the main version, properly designed for the real body. A short walk if you were a runner. Arm work if the injury is in the legs. Movement practice focused on what is available rather than what is not.

The function of the reduced version during recovery is the same as in any other context: to preserve continuity, maintain identity, and keep the path back open. It prevents the additional layer of drift that comes from complete absence, while respecting the physical reality of the injury.

Try it: Design the available version

If you are in a period of physical restriction due to injury, take time to design for what is actually available.

  1. Name what is off-limits. Be specific about what the injury prevents — not what you fear it might prevent, but what it concretely rules out right now.
  2. Name what is available. What can the body do that is adjacent to the practice? It does not need to be equivalent. It needs to be real.
  3. Design a version around what is available. This is not a placeholder version waiting for recovery. It is the real practice for this period.
  4. Set a light check-in point. Rather than waiting for full recovery to evaluate, pick a point — two weeks, a month — to assess what has changed and whether the design needs updating.

You're done when the available version is clearly defined and genuinely treated as the practice, not as a holding pattern.
